This study discusses collection development as a panacea for promoting effective use of library resources in academic libraries. Various factors have to be taken into consideration while developing a qualitative collection for the benefit of the users. These factors include community analysis, policies, selection, acquisition, stock evaluation and weeding out of irrelevant resources. It is important to evaluate the collection to know how well the materials are currently meeting needs and how likely the collection are to continue meeting the needs of current and future users. Library professionals need to take utmost care in developing a balanced collection, which will enhance the quality of the academic libraries and promote effective use of the resources by its client.
